Slumdog Millionaire: A Disappointment!
Just finished watching Slumdog Millionaire. What the hell was it?
I try my best to be pretty less critical about most of the stuff I see. I even watched 8 seasons of “Charmed” and have enjoyed lots of chick flicks….
I went to cinemas in Delhi and saw movies that I would never dare to buy as DVDs in Pakistan, and still came out feeling my money’s well spent, if not for anything but the impact and ambience of the cinema hall and sound etc.
But with this movie I simply felt disturbed. Please don’t for a minute think that the depiction of the slums disturbed me. I have been to India enough to breathe the poverty in (one big reason why my love for Pakistan just does not cease to diminish) .
..what was it it…i can’t seem to place it…
For starters the movie is surely too damn overrated. Secondly I smell serious propaganda here… is this a primer of the “real” India for the West?
And considering the western response in the form the massive oscar nominations blah ..blah blah…it just goes to show that westerners seem a bit too over excited by their new found insight…Its like they discovered Yoga or Kama Sutra all over gain!!!
Waisay goron ki simplicity ka andaza un ki countries mein hi ja kar hota hai…correct me if I am wrong.
I did not get the English being spoken by the Slumdogs!!!
Kya bakwas!!!
Although the end seemed a bit better but overall the movie really ticked me off..
The cinematography was awesome though…what amazing and difficult shots
The acting for the kids was very good.
Khair yeh movie aik test hai…dekhain goron ki tarha hum mien se kaun kitna impress hota hai?
cheers
Ali Noor
P.s. There is another movie I saw called Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! which seemed a bit similar to me. I found this movie to be much much better…I just loved the extremely amazing depiction of the punjabi culture in India…seemed a lot real and coherent…apparently inspired from true events. Do check it out and let me know

As a Pakistani you should stick to ‘Maula Jatt’
Ali, I totally agree to your views about Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! . It is a must watch movie. And yes, I rate it better then the Slumdog as well.
I think you did not like the unrealistic events in slumdog which were just rare. I do not rank Slumdog as low as you have but yes, the movie getting all the awards was a bit surprising and amazingly shocking. It felt awkwardly disturbing as well. Indians might have felt awesome on this event but maybe a few of them would have been considering the fact that they won the awards for their shown poverty and Jahaalat being mainly focused in the movie. and then, the weaknesses being highlighted more than they are.
For me, Will Smith’s Seven Pounds was the best movie of the year 2008. Im not a man who is really into the updates regarding the oscars or slammy grammy etc but as far as i know, seven pounds wasn’t nominated for any oscars??? correct me here please.
But for me, Seven Pounds is a brilliant movie and it surely got my oscars!
I highly recommend everyone to watch it. Have you yet Ali?
Lol so true man!! seriously.. highly over rated.. it aint that good!
I totally and completely agree with you on this one. This movie is just ……… . Extremely overrated. Nothing so good about it. I myself was stunned to see how come people rated it so high. Feels good that I am not the only one in this case.
I haven’t seen 7 pounds but surely will…
Well Noor,i really liked your views but i just Disagree with you. In my opinion, Film or Drama or Music or Poetry or anything related to Arts have this common line that we use Suspension of Disbelief so in this term i see myself accepting that language problem in the film. On the other side Osar’s are just yet another American Propaganda, to show how much they are good in Film – Making but if you actually see closely, people who got Oscar’s usually arnt american’s. i hope u got the point.!
Cheers
(this was simply my opinion )
Seven pounds is an awesome movie, i just saw it the day before. Full marks to it
yea ur rite….
i preferred not even watching the movie…it seemed too boring anyway…too overrated
i guess ur right mate!!!
and 7 pounds is really out of this world!! u MUSTT mUSTTT watch it!
You almost echoed my thoughts on this. I heard a rumor that said something like Hollywood putting it into limelight just like the people gave away Miss Universe straight for so many years to Indians – to open India for their cosmetic market. And why would this lady go all “lattoo” over Patel. Yeah, he acted fine, but nothing out of ordinary…
Sorry if I sound obscure – I just HATED the movie…

Ok, this is my last comment. Sorry for spamming.
And I wonder how did it beat “The curious case of Benjamin Button” in Golden Globe…
That is actually worth pondering…
ali good to know that u dont hav a depressed life like most rockstars
giv a big hi to sanjana
Nopes, The only point u seem to make is that the goras tend to believe OO so this is India. Unfortunately in the Movie Industry, thats not true at all. There are a lot of gora movies, war movies, political movies, in hollywood that are directly motivated by real events. Even those do not tarnish the image of gora-land in a way that the rest of the world starts to think that this IS them. Slumdog got really high in the charts, and that coming from India for more or less the first time has got you thinking this way. A coupla more movies go as high as slumdog and it will seem normal to you once again. Just like all hollywood movies, no matter what they show, it never means this really IS what they are.
And im sorry for all the people who just +1 your article by saying ‘exactly! took my words out of my mouth! and i agree! bla bla’, without thinking for themselves. Guys you arent getting free concert tickets anyway, or maybe u are
Seems more of a favouritism thread going on just like it happens an art community, OO Waheed Nasir posted a sketch/painting, wow Waheed Bhai its awesome, great work, without paying attention or being critical about the work.
Sorry if i took it too far, but just thought you should know. You can ‘not’ publish this post if it doesnt seem appropriate for this thread.
My Dear W,
This post is surely going to be published and is very appropriate.
Watch “City of Joy’, it is another movie where an attempt is made to communicate to the western world about certain aspects of India . I have no problems…and OK let me even forgive the attempt of making poor anparh Indians speaking perfect English (I guess subtitling machines must be really expensive)….
But my problem is in the aesthetics of this film. As I said earlier, that whenever I watch a movie, I am very rarely critical of it. This film unfortunately disturbed the basic aesthetics that I have gained over years of film viewing, I mean it is a perfectly Ok film but it is nothing compared to a movie such as Salam Bombay. And then when the world starts going really crazy over this movie, I do feel a bit weird. I get curious that can this, by any chance, be a case of the story of “the Emperors new clothes”
My friend their is no better way to judge any piece of art except for what it does to your heart. I have always liked stuff on how it appeals to the purest of my senses. Yes sometimes a liking may be cultivated but that is a process that can only begin if you if you are drawn to something strongly enough and not because your dad tells you.
This movie I still maintain seems to have been made with slightly mixed up intentions. It simply did not appeal to me.
And lastly it is not fair on your part to judge somebody as unthinking if they agree. I have done my thinking and feeling, and anybody who decides to agree must be given the same benefit of the doubt.
Mr. W this is not a fight. I am not offended by this movie neither should you be offended by its criticism.
If something is meant to last it will. I am, but a simple viewer.
Best Regards
Ali Noor
I thought the movie was fantastic. I am sorry to read your opinion about it, but everyone I know liked it too. It’s not about the portrayal or propaganda, rather a novel that is converted into a movie. Mind you the novel had been translated into more than 37 languages. 10 Oscar nominations speak for the majority – doesn’t it? On second thoughts, I was dragged to a movie called “Luck By Chance” …. Check it out if you can.
i liked slumdog millionare but everybody has there likes and dislikes. but i do agree tht it is over-rated and a bit unrealistic. It’s the same case with words, a set of words can have a real impact on one person and might not touch the other one at all.
hope i’m making sense!
cheers!
It was a bit unrealistic but I did kind of like it.
Someone mentioned 7 Pounds – definitely worth a watch.
Oye Lucky Lucky Oye was absolutely ‘awesome’.
Hello
Me LOVED slumdog. you never mentioned what you thought of the music though. LOVED jai ho.
MISLED by fellow stalkers/commentators watched seven pounds, also coz i love Smith, didn’t like it one bit. real let down. too mushy. its nothing ..nothing.. compared to the pursuit of Happyness…Will Smith and the actress are HOT though. anybody who reads this I recomend – DONT WATCH
@ Raini!
i am shocked. I found Seven Pounds the best film of 2008
different point of view!
cheers
i usually don’t watch indian movies but as i heard slumdog won golden globe that steered me to the theater but i agreed with ali noor that’s not the real face of india which they showed but yeah i watched seven pounds it’s way better than other movies of smith and have u ever watched grand tornato?? itz a great movie about minorities in U.S
I agree….my review was about the same, shockingly propagandist and totally over hyped….quite a lot of coincidence as well.
yEH UR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ALI..BUT I WONDER HOW SLUM “dOg” wOn 8 OscaRs…MAY B AMERICANS PROVED SHIT IS WORTH..AGAIN..!!!!
I haven’t seen Slumdog Millionaire yet, but if this is true – about America using India for propaganda reasons – then I think that is horrible!!
Slumdog Millionaire has been over-hyped, but it is a genre of movie making that most of the world have yet to see. I was happy to see it wasn’t a typical Indian style movie that was laden with stupid plots, singing and dancing. There were still plenty of holes in the story, but it was overall a heartfelt movie that people of any background could feel. As far as the best movie…I don’t think so. There are other movies that can trump Slumdog…but it seems that band wagoners will continue to overrate the movie until the public begins to believe this was the best flick of the year.
I haven’t seen many indian movies, but of the ones I’ve seen, I have enjoyed Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Each had a beautiful message for the viewers.
although I just watched 5 movies last year, but I think The Dark Knight was the best among them, the best part of slumdog was when the kid jumps into the pool of excretion, i watched the movie in a sleepy state on a plane , how he was able to answer some questions also seems unbelievable or maybe I just dozed off in between?
Yah Budy
Thats the reason i have not see it yet Fullll markx It is boring becuse i don”t se it
Chill dude
Overrated Movie.
To be honest…its almost 4 years that i’ve banned indian stuff !
total Pakistani
hahahaha – I read this post after I commented on the previous one. I agree with you completely!!
Dear Ali Noor..
I’m a huge Noori fan and I don’t know why there are very less noori lovers in India…
You are right about the film…esp. slum kids talking english…when they were young (which was the best part of the film) they spoke hindi but later…dunno what happened…
anyways..
I never heard Noori performing in India like some of other Pakistani bands like Strings and the good for nothing Jal does…
Please doooooooooooo come to India… ones and more and more often….
with lots and lots of love..
soumya..
P.S.. Please if you are coming here to perform let us know in advance … I will plot a conspiracy to kidnap ali hamza
i totally disagree with ali noors post, the thing is tht i met so many western ppl and all of them are too much in to this movie, europians americans, i mean everyone i ve been to so many places i mean to their home listerally where i have seen they watchin slum dogg with their family and they were so much impressed by the fact tht how the poverty in india is and how ppl are servivin in this country they didnt know such act which shown in the film like makin money out of the grabage and arranging food aswell.. they were totally shocked by this act which they didnt know and thts the part hit them alot perhaps.
we didnt like the movie we see them daily in our life and we know whats going on.
they were unaware about it but once they are aware – oscars and oscars..
Ok I watched both movies and loved both of them. But the end of Oye Lucky Lucky Oye could have been better if they had gotten rid of that whole tv show thingy and made it end with him turning around and telling the paan walla his name– so much more dramatic. I don’t agree with you about Slumdog Millionaire though, I don’t think the film makers made it to prove some hugantic point to the West, I just think it was a fun movie with the basic Bollywood masalla formula except they did it up real nice. Sure, the English part was kinda weird but I thoroughly enjoyed it =P
